"Nothing is 100% ethical" — Greenwashing and Biodynamic Cotton with Roberto Crivello

Roberto Crivello has spent 20+ years on the production side of apparel — DuPont Textiles, New Balance, DDC Lab. He opens this one by refusing the word every brand is currently using. What he uses instead, the matrix he runs with Fortune 500 clients, and how a vegetable stand on the North Fork turned into biodynamic cotton.

What’s in this one

Roberto founded Science of Apparel and later bought Isaora, and he will not say “sustainable.” His objection is that the dictionary definition — able to maintain a certain level — commits a brand to nothing. He wants “ethical” and “positive impact,” because those two you can be held to.

So this one is less about the inbox than usual. It’s about what a brand is actually promising when it says “conscious”: the decision matrix he runs with Fortune 500 clients, the one client whose packaging was ethical down to everything but the metal hang-tag clip, and the biodynamic cotton he says uses 70–80% less water than conventional.

What you’ll take away

1Why Roberto refuses the word "sustainable" — and what "ethical" commits a brand to that "sustainable" doesn't.
2The decision matrix he runs with Fortune 500 clients: how far up the ladder you actually want to go, and what each rung costs.
3What biodynamic cotton is, where the Demeter standard came from in 1924, and why he rates it above organic on both water and fair trade.
